Towards Green Economy
June 5 was commemorated as World Environment Day.It was on this day (June 5) in 1972 that United Nations organised a conference on environment at Stockholm in Sweden. The conference lasted upto 16 June and foundation of commemorating environment day and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was laid out. Consequently, first World Environment Day was commemorated on June 5, 1973. Indutrialsation and extraction of of Natural Resources forced planners to think about protecting environment all around the globe. On a unified call from UN representatives from 113 countries reached the conference venue. Smt. Indira Gandhi representated India in the conference.
World Environment Day is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The Day is to advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.
The host for World Environment Day 2012 is the Federative Republic of Brazil. The theme is Green Economy: Does it include you?
Every year a theme is decided upon. This year’s theme is-‘Green Economy-Does it include you?’ It means evolving economy in such a way whereby life quality increases on earth aiming at social equality without damaging environment set up. Every year there is a country to host the theme.Federative Republic of Brazil is the host this year’s theme after 1992 whereupon this country has progressed remarkably on economic front and steps towards green economy has duly been taken by this country. the country is likely to benefit once again this year as well. Last year India hosted the theme highlighted by rallies, plantation and myriad programmes at Governmnet-Non Governemnt Organisation level.
