Lahul-Spiti top in country as Best Female Sex Ratio
Tribal District of Himachal Pradesh Lahaul and Spiti had been adjudged the Best in maintaining female sex ratio in the country with 1017 females against one thousand males during past decade. This was revealed by Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister, in the inaugural address of two-day long workshop on ‘Rights of Girl Child and Future Impact on Imbalanced Sex Ratio’, organized by the Himachal Pradesh State Social Welfare Board, here today.
Chief Minister said that consistent efforts by the State through various policies and programmes envisioned during past four years had yielded positive results and female sex ratio had increased to 974 against one thousand male as per the latest census in the State. He said that pre-natal sex determination was a cognizable offence and any individual providing information about undertaking pre-natal tests and termination of female pregnancy was eligible to draw a handsome cash reward. He said that the State had taken a serious note of the diminishing female sex ratio in the age group of zero to six years of age and introduced various schemes to motivate parents give birth to girl child which was essential for balancing of the social system. He said that under ‘Beti Hai Anmol’ programme Rs. 5,100 were being deposited at the time of birth of a girl child of poor families which multiplies substantially by the time she grows young to meet her education and marriage expenses. He said that girls were being imparted free education upto the highest standard besides providing text books and uniform free of cost. He said that ‘Mukhya Mantri Kanyadaan Yojna’, ‘Matri Seva Yojna’, ‘Mother Teresa Matri Sambal Yojna’, ‘Matri Shakti Bima Yojna’, ‘Matritva Sahyog Yojna’, ‘Sabala Yojna’ were some of the major schemes which had been implemented in the State for women empowerment.
