HPTDC records Rs 7.73 Cr profit in Q1

Shimla: State-owned Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) has registered net profit of Rs 7.73 core in the first quater of this finance year.

Disclosing this, a spokesperson for HPTDC said here that the gross profit up to end of June was Rs 8.38. The corporation had registered net profit of Rs 4.79 crore in 2009-10.

Booking and occupancy rates have gone up sharply since the corporation started online bookings about two years ago, turning around the losses and to report operating yearly profits.
However, overall the corporation remains in the red and has an accumulated debt of about Rs 24 crore on its books.

The corporation has 59 luxury hotels and restaurants across the state and also runs 23 luxury and deluxe Volvo buses. It recorded gross profit of Rs 1.56 crore from Volvo bus services in last three months as 36,200 tourists used its service.

On set of monsoon is considered beginning of lean season each year but due to protests in Jammu and Kashmir there had been a surge in tourist footfall in Himachal hill stations like Shimla, Manali, Dalhousie and Dharamsala.

The official claimed that it has 25 to 30 per cent more occupancy in hotels and buses as most of the tourists were opting for this hill state after canceling their bookings to trouble-torn Srinagar and its nearby tourist spots. The state had registered 1.3 crore tourist footfalls in the last financial year,  which included about 5 to 6 lakh foreign tourists.
