Generation stops at 1500-MW Nathpa Jhakri power plant

Shimla: The 1500-MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydel Power Project in Rampur and Kinnaur area of Himachal has been shut down for a day as silt level rose to 7,000 ppm against permissible limit of 4,000 to 5,000 ppm today.

Project In-charge at Jkahri, NC Bansal, told that increasing silt level forced the management to stop generation in the wee hours this morning and all the six units have been stopped as silt level gone up to 7,000 ppm. He said the project was also shut down for routine repairs yesterday for some hours but it has not been working since 4 am this morning. This led to load shedding in several beneficiary states, including Himachal. The project was generating over 36 million units of power per day and meeting the peaking requirements of northern states of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, J&K, Rajasthan, UP and Uttarakhand. This was second major shut down of this project as it was also closed for generation on June 25 due to heavy rainfall and resulting increase of silt level up to 7,500 ppm.
