Himachal Pradesh to re-assess ground water situation

Shimla: To take stock of ground water situation in the hill state, the government today constituted a state level committee to re-estimate the ground water resources in Himachal Pradesh.

Disclosing the constitution such a committee, a government spokesman said that they would estimate annual replenishable ground water resources in accordance with the Ground Water Resources Estimation Methodology.

It would also estimate the status of utilization of the annual replenishable ground water resource and has been asked to submit a report within one year.

To be headed by principal secretary irrigation and public health (IPH) department, other members on board would include engineer-in-chief IPH, director industries, director urban development, director agriculture, nominee of HP Water Management Board, general manager NABARD and other engineers. Regional director, Central Ground Water Board would be the member secretary of the committee.

The last country-wise assessment annual replenishable ground water resources was done in 2004 but since then alarming changes in ground water scenario in many parts of the country has been observed.

It is also the mandate of the National Water Policy, 2002 as well as the State Water Policy, 2005 to re-assess the ground water periodically, the spokesman said.
