15th Revd. Dr. Samuel Slater Memorial Invitational Inter-School English Debate final on May 1
Shimla: The final and semi-final debates during the 15th Revd. Dr. Samuel Slater Memorial Invitational Inter-School English Debates will be held on May 1 at Bishop Cotton School. Shimla. The chief guest for the event will be Manisha Nanda, principal secretary, tourism, language, art and culture, Himachal Pradesh. The pre-quarter final debates (24 debates) were held on April 28 and 29, while the four quarter-final debates were held today.
15 schools are participating in the debates this year. These are: Auckland House School, Shimla; Cathedral & John Connon School, Mumbai; Dubai Modern High School, Dubai; La Martiniere, Boys’, Kolkata; La Martiniere, Girls’, Kolkata; La Martiniere Girls College, Lucknow; Loreto House, Kolkata; Mayo College for Girls’; The Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehradun; St. James School, Kolkata; The Assam Valley School, Assam; The Doon School, Dehradun; The Sagar School; The Sri Ram School, Gurgaon and Vasant Valley School, New Delhi. Teams from theses schools are speaking on 24 varied topics, ranging from ‘A foetus is not a person’, ‘Academic qualification ensures success in life’, ‘All limits on immigration should be abolished’, ‘All religious involvement in schools should be banned’, and ‘Cheerleaders should be banned from professional sporting events’.
The debates were started under the headmastership of Kabir K. Mustafi in 1996 in honour of Revd. Samuel Slater, the first headmaster of Bishop Cotton School.
