State AG to conduct intensive audit of MNREGA
Shimla: Implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) in Himachal Pradesh would be carried out at the state level through the state accountant general this year.
Talking to media persons in Shimla on Monday, principal accountant general Rita Mitra said that the state audit of the national scheme is scheduled for current year. Replying to a question, she stated that there is a possibility for auditing the impact and outcomes of the 10- year special industrial package that was given to the state for encouraging industries by giving a tax holiday, which ended on March 31, 2010.
“We have been doing the review of industries department, but in future if need arises the aspect of industrial package can also be linked to the same while auditing”, said Mitra. She also informed that instead of following the current trend of placing all the reports of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in the Assembly on the last day of the budget session, a proposal to release various reports all round the year is being mooted.
Mitra was talking to the press to highlight the irregularities in various government schemes and departments pointed out by the CAG report for financial year 2008-09, that was placed in the house on April 13. The current report analyzed that implementation of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in the state was slow and a lot of funds remained unspent. Similarly, it highlighted the irregularities in the police department’s modernisation scheme, which has not been implemented effectively.
