Liquor becomes costlier in Himachal

Shimla: Local and Indian-made foreign liquor has become costlier in Himachal Pradesh as the state government has decided to raise the prices of both kinds of liquor by Rs 15 to 20 per liter.

JC Sharma, commissioner, Excise and Taxation, said here today that implementing the new excise policy, prices of Indian-made foreign liquor and local alcohol have been increased in the range of Rs 15 to 20 per liter, besides license fee and excise duty on liquor also being hiked. To generate more revenue for the debt-ridden state exchequer, now license fee has been raised from existing Rs 140 per proof liter to Rs 157 per proof liter on Indian-made foreign liquor, while on local alcohol it has been hiked from Rs 105 per proof liter to Rs 113 per proof liter.

He said that the excise department is collecting Rs 480 crore from the sale of liquor, which is now expected to rise to Rs 540 crore in the current finance year. Justifying the hike in prices, the official said that as liquor is already much cheaper in this hill state compared to others border states and therefore the hike would control liquor smuggling from the border areas.
