Himachal Univ. organises Seminar cum Workshop on Physics
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh University’s Physics Department has organised an eight daylong workshop cum seminar under the aegis of University Grants Commission (UGC) Special Assistance Programme (SAP).
The theme of the workshop is one of the hottest topics in the area of Condensed Matter Physics with applications of interdisciplinary nature in Physics, Chemistry, Biomedicine, Bio technology, Material science, in drug designing and electronics industry. The Seminar cum workshop is covering theoretical, computational and applied aspects of this field in an intense manner.
Prof. Sunil Kumar Gupta, Vice-Chancellor, Himachal Pradesh University, inaugurated the function and appreciated the efforts of the Physics Department in organizing the workshop. He also highlighted the new and state of the art facilities like X-ray Diffractometer and Scanning Tunneling Microscope coming on the campus.
Prof. Sushil Auluck a leading theoretical and Computational Physicist in his Key Note address presented to the delegates a bird’s eye view of electronic structure calculations using first principle calculations and how they are becoming more important in tailoring the materials of the future. He also informed the participants about the new computational facilities which are being raised at the national level as part of national computing grid for physical and engineering sciences. He suggested that organization of such Seminars cum Workshops is the need of the hour to have a scientific edge in basic sciences which is required for technological advancement of the country.
The resource persons who are going to interact with the young researchers are Prof. Sushil Auluck from IIT Kanpur, Prof, GP Das from Department of Material Science, Indian Association for Cultivation of Science, Prof, Manoj Harbola, IIT Kanpur, Prof. Rajinder Prashad, Physics Department IIT Kanpur, Prof. Rajiv Kapri, Physics Department, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali and Prof. P.K.
