6 IGMC students among accused named in Punjab …

Shimla: After the paper leak scandal involving admissions to Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla, two years ago, the premier medical education institute in Himachal Pradesh is yet again in news for all the wrong reasons. Investigation into the Punjab Pre-medical Entrance Test (PMET-2008) scandal, whereby medical students were found appearing in entrance exams for other aspirants, has identified at least six students of IGMC, Shimla, who impersonated for money.

Besides, two students of Patna Medical College, four students of King George Medical College Lucknow, and one student each of GBMC Kanpur and AIIMS have also been identified. All of them are students of Ist or 3rd year of their MBBS courses and have good academic record. The investigation into the case was transferred to a special investigation team (SIT) on directions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court last year. The police have so far named 72 accused in the case and arrested 54 persons. During interrogation the accused are said to have confessed that they used to charge up to Rs 8-9 lakh for appearing in each exam.
