Aviation meteorological observatory at Gaggal …

HimVani

Shimla: The “aviation meteorological observatory (AMS)” set up at the Gaggal Airport (Kangra) by Ministry of earth Sciences (MoES) started functioning from today. State Met Office director Manmohan Singh said that the basic objective of establishing an AMS at Gaggal is to contribute towards the safety, regularity, efficiency and economy of aircraft operations. Metrological parameters via temperature, wind peed & wind direction, visibility, state of the sky and atmospheric pressure would be recorded at the airport and its information passed on to the airport authority. Sing claimed that with the establishment of an AMS at Gaggal airport, all airports in HP – Shimla, Bhuntar & now Gaggal – have been equipped with meteorological services rendered by the India Metrological Department. Due to hilly terrain, the three airports in Himachal figure among the toughest for landing in the country.
