9 wheat flour samples failed test in one year

By: ML Verma

Shimla: About nine samples of wheat flour failed to qualify the purity test out of the 29 samples taken from different PDS depots in the state during the last one year. Moreover, the state Food and Civil Supply department also found 277 LPG domestic connections being used illegally during the same period.

While replying to call attention motion brought by Kaul Singh Thakur (Darang-Cong) after the Question Hour in the Assembly here today, food and civil supply minister Ramesh Dhawala said that nine samples failed to qualify the quality test out of the 29 samples taken by the department from different places in the state. He said that no case was registered under Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, as the failed samples were found having moisture content due to negligence of some flour mills. The minister said that the department also has written a warning letter to floor mills supplying moisture-affected flour to PDS depot.

He also informed that the department has stopped supply of wheat grain to firms that were found faulty in supplying moisture-affected wheat flour after grinding. He said that about Rs 11.54 lakh fine was charged from errant shopkeepers found guilty for violation of various rules during department checking last year. Earlier, Kaul Singh alleged that the state government has failed to provide quality food items, especially flour, under the PDS as mill owners are misleading the government after exchanging quality wheat supplied to them for grinding with substandard wheat grain. The minister said that a food testing lab would be set up at Shimla and one such lab is being run at Kandaghat.

Dhawala said that during last one year, 277 cases of misuse of domestic LPG cylinder came into notice during routine checking. He also said that LPG supply was found irregular in rural areas but it was compensated by fulfilling demand after pursuing the matter vigorously with oil companies. Food and civil supplies minister said this while replying to a query of Rajesh Dharmani (Cong.-Ghumarwin) during the Question Hour.
