Washington: The World Bank has in principle agreed to sanction Himachal Pradesh Programmatic Development Policy Loan (DPL) amounting US $450 million for sustainable environmental growth. This was revealed by Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal after a meeting with top World Bank authorities in Washington yesterday.

The Chief Minister said with World Bank assistance, the state would carry forward its endeavours in the field of environment and fast-track environment protection initiatives. He said so far the state government had been spending out of its own resources for such activities and the World Bank assistance would supplement its initiatives not only for phasing out obsolete technologies but also for research and development of emerging and new technologies, both in climate change and environment infrastructure.

Dhumal apprised the World Bank authorities of the state’s ambitious unique Community-led Assessment, Awareness, Advocacy and Action Programme (CLAP) for Environment Protection and Carbon Neutrality through school children and civil society at gram panchayat level.
Chief Minister said that the state was working towards developing its own policy strategy and action plan for climate change with an objective to outline the State’s response to climate change, tailored to its specific circumstances as part of Western Himalayas.
He said that the state had constituted a state-level governing council and executive council on climate change to oversee and coordinate work on climate change in the state.
